The Australian community is diverse and is constantly changing. At the same time how people engage with sport is changing too. In recent years, the popularity of organised, club-based sports has generally been declining while the popularity of less organised, recreational activities has generally been increasing.
So, what does this mean for UniSA Sport clubs?
As the community changes and diversifies, UniSA Sport sports clubs also need to change and diversify to reflect the communities around them. This way your club will continue to be attractive physical activity options for everyone. Everybody has a right to participate in sport and physical activity. To engage people within the community a successful community sport program must enhance things that encourage people to play and remove barriers.
Inclusion of LGBTI+ people in your club can bring many benefits to your club. Diverse sports clubs are stronger, happier, sustainable and more welcoming than less diverse sports clubs.
Play by the Rules and Proud 2 Play have developed a free, interactive online 'Creating an LGBTI+ Inclusive Club' course suitable for coaches, administrators, officials, players and volunteers. This course assists participants with defining the LGBTI+ community, identifying the benefits of LGBTI+ inclusion for clubs, using LGBTI+ inclusive language, addressing barriers to LGBTI+ inclusion, and changing club culture to be more inclusive of LGBTI+.
Together we can all bring about change and promote a more inclusive club environment.
