The 2019 UniSport Nationals Div 1 event held on the Gold Coast from the 28th September – 3rd October was a great success for Team UniSA.

A team of 50 (including staff, team managers, coaches and sports trainer) represented UniSA in Judo, Kendo, Cycling, Mixed Ultimate and Women’s Volleyball.

It was a successful week for UniSA with our Women’s Volleyball team winning Silver in a repeat of their UniSport Nationals Div 2 grand final against the University of Canberra (UC). They played extremely well in the final, challenging UC in a five-set match.

Our 9 male cyclists performed well as a team in both the road race and criterium against a high-class field, with best results including Justin Gassner finishing 7th in the road race and Patrick Constable finishing 5th in the criterium.

Our mixed Ultimate team suffered a few close losses but remained upbeat throughout the week and finished off with a well-deserved win in their final match against Flinders University to finish 13th overall.

Our Kendo competitors showed tremendous fighting spirit against some tough opposition with highlights including Darren Kawka progressing through to the semi-finals.

Our Judo team also faced some tough opposition, however, won their all-important match against cross-town rivals the University of Adelaide.

All student-athletes should be proud of having represented themselves, UniSA Sport and UniSA in a very professional and respectful manner throughout the week.

Thank you to all team managers, coaches and support staff who all assisted in making the event a success. Special mention to Team Captains Sabine Mills (Volleyball) and Lachie Eichner (Ultimate) for their leadership, and congratulations to our UniSA Spirit Award Winners Jack Hall (Ultimate) and Claudia Taylor (Volleyball).

Bring on 2020!
