When we start university, we know all about what subjects we are going to study and what textbooks we need. What many of us don’t know is university sport is an awesome addition to your university experience. Here are 8 reasons why you should join a UniSA sport club this year:

1. It’s a great way to meet new people and make lifelong friends 👯

Many of us move away from home to start university – whether you’ve moved across the state, from interstate, or even from overseas. Despite all being new in the first year, plenty of us spend our first couple of lectures wondering how we are going to meet new people and make friends. Joining a sports club is a great way to meet likeminded people and see them regularly. It’s an opportunity to expand your social network while having fun and making friendships that can last a lifetime.

2. It’s good for your wellbeing 🧘

Experts recommend a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise a day, and for good reason! Exercise has plenty of health benefits – it increases blood flow to the brain, leading to improved concentration, enhanced memory, and can help inspire creativity. Exercise also releases endorphins which improve and stabilise your mood. Most clubs have regular training and scheduled games, so there are plenty of opportunities to keep your body and mind fit and focused throughout your studies.

3. It’s a brilliant way to balance study 📚

If you’re getting frustrated with an assignment or having trouble studying for a test, shut your laptop and go outside. Taking a break from your studies to have a kick of the footy or to shoot some hoops is an awesome way to de-stress and recharge.

Regular club meet-ups make it easy to put recharge time into your weekly schedule. Plus, it’s also great time management practice; by training regularly and attending club get-togethers, you’ll need to plan your schedule and avoid procrastination so you can make sure you get all your assignments in on time. Study and sport go hand-in-hand!

4. You can boost your CV with transferrable skills 💼

Participating on the field isn’t the only way you can get involved in a sports club. It’s important to gain experience to build your CV/resume before you finish your degree. Volunteering for sports clubs offers experience in a variety of positions, including as a treasurer, secretary, social media manager, event coordinator, team manager, and even coach. That real-life experience gives you more hands-on opportunities you can call upon in your future career, impressing future employers once you graduate.

5. It’s an opportunity to represent your university 🏆

Teamwork makes the dream work! Being part of a team and achieving success together is an incredibly rewarding experience. There is nothing like working your butt off at training during the week, playing sport on the weekend, and celebrating a win with your uni mates.

There are also further opportunities to represent UniSA through sport. You may participate in intervarsity sports – like SA Challenge and UniSport Nationals Div 1 and Div 2, as well as on-campus events like the VC Cup. Joining a sports club could be your foot in the door to represent your university on a bigger scale.

6. You’ll get the chance to try something different 🚀

These days, there is a huge variety of unique sports clubs to join around the country. Ever wanted to play Ultimate Frisbee? What about trying Shodokan Aikido? Maybe you’re interested in rock climbing, or want to become an eSports champ? Joining clubs is a great way to try something different. Who knows, it might be your next big thing! UniSA Sport clubs welcome new members at all skill levels, so it doesn’t matter if you’ve never played a certain sport before. Just get out there and get involved!

7. It’s easy to join, super affordable, and you’ll get access to great facilities 💲

With gym facilities on all campuses, it’s easy to find a training session that suits you. or even organise a social game to improve your skills.

Some UniSA Sport club membership costs as little as $20 annually – a lot more affordable than many community clubs across Adelaide. Through your membership, you also get access to great facilities like Pridham Hall’s heated pool, rock climbing wall, and more. With four metro campuses, our clubs are spread far and wide, and there is bound to be a club close to where you live.

8. Most importantly, it’s fun! 🎉

Playing sports is a terrific pastime – it gets you active and outside, it lets you unleash your competitive spirit, and best of all, you get to meet new people and make life-long friends.
