This year’s SA Challenge was an absolute nail-biter, with Team UniSA placing second, just behind winners Flinders University after the two teams fought it out until the last sport.

The annual UniSport Australia endorsed event was held over two days in April, with UniSA, Flinders and Adelaide Uni competing in five sports on Friday, April 5 and three sports on Friday, April 12.

Four of the events – indoor volleyball, 3x3 basketball, netball 5s and badminton – were held at UniSA’s Pridham Hall, while ultimate frisbee, 5-a-side lacrosse, tennis and the athletics relay were held at Adelaide Uni Playing Fields.

UniSA showed their dominance in the volleyball, badminton, ultimate frisbee and lacrosse competitions, winning all four.

They also placed second in athletics and third in basketball, netball and tennis.

Flinders Uni won all four other events, with Adelaide Uni failing to win any sport.

Despite Flinders and UniSA finishing equal on four sports, Flinders won on a countback after having more second places and finishing on 20 points, three ahead of UniSA.
Adelaide Uni earned 11 points.

Over 250 university students participated in the event, with UniSA having 96 registrations – the most of all the universities.

Big thanks must go to the basketball, netball and lacrosse referees, without whom the event wouldn’t have been possible, and to Athletics SA for assisting the delivery of the Uni Loop Relay event.

Thanks also to Chobani for supplying yoghurt to the students at the event.

UniSA’s next intervarsity competition is coming up in July, with the UniSport Nationals Div 2 being held on the Gold Coast.
